How to Force Tabs to Sleep in Chrome Desktop

person Patrick Bushe · calendar_today April 10, 2026

Even with Chrome's native "Memory Saver" toggled on, active scripts can trick the browser into keeping the tab awake indefinitely. To manually force tabs to sleep on Chrome desktop, the Tab Manager extension provides the ultimate override. Click its icon and hit "Suspend All But Active." The extension sends a kill-signal to the background renderer frames, physically unloading the memory cache while retaining the favicon, guaranteeing the tabs sleep precisely when you command them to.
