What Questions to Ask Before Hiring an AI Consultant
person Patrick Bushe · calendar_today April 15, 2026
Before signing a contract with an AI consultant, ask these questions to separate experienced professionals from overpromising salespeople:
About Their Experience
- "Can you show me 2-3 examples of AI implementations you have done for businesses with fewer than 20 employees?"
- "What industries have you worked with, and which are you strongest in?"
- "What is the smallest project you have done, and what was the outcome?"
About Your Project
- "Based on what I have told you, what is the single highest-impact automation you would recommend starting with?"
- "What existing tools and systems will you need to integrate with?"
- "What does a realistic timeline look like for my specific situation?"
- "What will my team need to do during the implementation?"
About Costs and ROI
- "What is the total cost including tools, implementation, and ongoing subscriptions?"
- "How do you measure success, and when should I expect to see ROI?"
- "What happens if the automation does not deliver the expected results?"
- "Are there any ongoing costs after the initial implementation?"
About Support and Ownership
- "Who owns the automations and data after the project is complete?"
- "What happens if I need changes after the project ends?"
- "Do you provide training and documentation for my team?"
- "What is your response time for support requests?"
About Their Approach
- "Do you recommend specific vendors, or are you tool-agnostic?"
- "How do you handle situations where the best solution is simpler than what I originally asked for?"
- "What is your process for discovering which tasks to automate?"
Red Flag Answers
If the consultant cannot answer these questions clearly, or if they deflect with jargon, buzzwords, or vague promises, that tells you everything you need to know. A good consultant will appreciate these questions because it shows you are serious about getting real results.
