How to Turn Off Dark Mode on Android (Why It Won't Turn Off, and How to Fix)
April 24, 2026 · 8 min read
Dark mode on Android is more thorough than on iPhone, which means turning it off also takes more steps. The system, the launcher, individual apps, and Chrome each can run dark independently. This guide covers every layer and the common reasons dark mode refuses to turn off.
The Short Answer
Open Settings, Display, and switch the theme from Dark to Light. That covers the system, most apps, and the launcher. For specific apps that stay dark (Gmail, Drive, Chrome, Instagram), each has its own theme setting that needs to be changed inside the app. If dark mode keeps coming back, a schedule, an automation, or the Override force-dark developer option is the cause.
Turn Off System Dark Mode on Android
On stock Android (Pixel and similar):
1. Open Settings.
2. Tap Display.
3. Tap Dark theme.
4. Toggle off.
On Samsung Galaxy phones:
1. Open Settings.
2. Tap Display.
3. Under Dark mode, tap Light.
4. Tap Dark mode settings and confirm Schedule is off if you do not want it switching on a schedule.
The system UI, notification shade, and most native apps should now be light.
Dark Mode Won't Turn Off Android
If you flipped the system to Light and parts of your phone are still dark, one of these is the cause.
1. A schedule is on. Settings, Display, Dark theme settings, and turn off Schedule.
2. The Override force-dark developer option is on. Settings, System, Developer Options, scroll to Override force-dark, toggle off. If Developer Options is not visible, you may have enabled it before. Tap Settings, search Developer, and the menu appears.
3. A specific app has its own dark setting overriding the system. Open the app, find Settings, Theme, and pick Light.
4. Battery saver is forcing dark mode. Some Android versions auto-enable dark theme when Battery saver is on. Settings, Battery, turn off Battery saver, or change its dark theme behavior in Battery, Battery saver settings.
5. A Bedtime, Focus, or Wind down schedule is enabled. Settings, Digital Wellbeing and parental controls, Bedtime mode. Check if Grayscale or Dark theme is part of the bedtime routine.
Turn Off Chrome Dark Mode on Android
Chrome has two settings that produce dark visuals: theme and force-dark for websites.
1. Open Chrome.
2. Tap the three-dot menu, then Settings.
3. Tap Theme.
4. Pick Light or System default (and make sure system is Light).
For websites still rendering dark:
1. Type chrome://flags in the address bar.
2. Search Force Dark Mode.
3. Set Auto Dark Mode for Web Contents to Default or Disabled.
4. Tap Relaunch.
If you do not remember enabling that flag, it might still be on. Check anyway.
Turn Off Google Dark Mode on Android
Google apps each have their own theme setting on Android.
Gmail: open the app, menu icon, Settings, your account, Theme, Light.
Google Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides: open each app, tap Settings, Theme, Light.
Google Search app: Settings, General, Theme, Light.

Open in Chrome Web StoreGoogle Maps: Settings, Theme, Always in light theme.
For Google services in Chrome, the Chrome theme setting and the force-dark flag are what control them.
Turn Off Dark Mode on Samsung
Samsung's Dark mode panel has more options than stock Android.
1. Settings, Display, Dark mode.
2. Tap Light.
3. Tap Dark mode settings.
4. Toggle off Apply to wallpaper if it stayed dark.
5. Toggle off Adaptive color filter if you do not want Samsung adjusting colors.
6. Confirm Schedule is off.
Galaxy Bixby Routines can also force dark mode based on triggers like time of day or low battery. Open Bixby Routines, look for any routine that toggles dark mode, and disable.
Why Is My Phone in Dark Mode (Android)
The most common reasons Android stays in dark mode despite the toggle being off:
1. A schedule is set. Sunset to sunrise auto-switches the theme.
2. Battery saver auto-enables dark theme.
3. Bedtime mode is on and forcing grayscale or dark.
4. A specific app has its own dark setting overriding the system look.
5. The accessibility setting Color inversion is on. Settings, Accessibility, Color and motion, turn off Color inversion.
6. On Samsung, a Bixby Routine is triggering it.
Going through this list usually reveals the cause within a minute or two.
Can't Turn Off Dark Mode Chrome
Chrome on Android sometimes appears stuck in dark mode even with the theme set to Light. Three things to check:
1. Chrome theme. Three-dot menu, Settings, Theme, pick Light explicitly (not System default).
2. Chrome flags. chrome://flags, search Force Dark, set to Default, Relaunch.
3. Android system theme. Settings, Display, Dark theme off. Chrome's System default theme follows this.
If all three are correct and Chrome still loads websites dark, clear Chrome's app data: Settings, Apps, Chrome, Storage, Clear data. This resets every Chrome setting. You will be signed out and lose synced state, so use as a last resort.
Turn Off Dark Mode Chrome Mobile
The steps above cover Chrome on Android specifically. For Chrome on iPhone, see our iPhone dark mode off guide.
Turn Off Dark Mode for Specific App Only
If the system is dark and you want only a specific app to be light, set the system to Dark and override the per-app theme inside that app. Most major apps have a Theme setting under their Settings menu. Pick Light there. The app stays light while the rest of the system stays dark.
This works for Gmail, Slack, YouTube, Reddit, Twitter, Spotify, Instagram, Discord, Notion, and similar apps. It does not work for apps that only have a System default theme option, since those follow the system.
Key Takeaways
The master toggle is Settings, Display, Dark theme off. If dark mode persists, the cause is usually a schedule, Battery saver, Bedtime mode, the Override force-dark developer option, a Bixby Routine on Samsung, or the Color inversion accessibility setting. Per-app dark mode in Gmail, Drive, Chrome, and Instagram needs to be turned off inside each app. For users who decide they want dark mode back later, see our Android dark mode setup guide.
