Chrome Extension

AI Image Detector - Privacy Policy

Effective Date: April 11, 2026

info Overview

AI Image Detector is a Chrome extension that detects AI-generated images by analyzing embedded metadata (EXIF, IPTC, XMP, C2PA, PNG text chunks). By default, all scanning happens entirely on your device. We do not collect, store, or transmit any personal data. The only exception is the optional Deep Scan feature, which you must explicitly enable and configure with your own API credentials.

shield Local Processing (Default Mode)

check_circle 100% Local by Default

When you run a standard metadata scan, the image's binary data is fetched and parsed locally in your browser using the ExifReader library. The resulting metadata analysis stays on your device. No image data, URLs, or analysis results are transmitted to our servers or any third-party services.

psychology Optional Deep Scan Feature

AI Image Detector offers an optional Deep Scan feature that uses third-party AI APIs for pixel-level analysis. This feature is entirely opt-in and requires you to provide your own API credentials.

toggle_off

Opt-In Only

Deep Scan is disabled by default. It will not function unless you manually enable it in extension settings and provide your own API credentials for SightEngine or Hive Moderation.

upload

Data Transmission

When you click "Deep Scan" on a specific image, that image is sent directly from your browser to your chosen API provider (SightEngine or Hive Moderation). We do not intermediate, log, or store the image or the API response.

policy

Third-Party Processing

API providers process images according to their own privacy policies. Please review the privacy policies of SightEngine or Hive Moderation before using Deep Scan.

key Permissions & Why We Need Them

AI Image Detector requires the following Chrome permissions to function:

language

Host Permissions (All URLs)

Required to fetch the raw binary data of images on any website so we can parse their embedded metadata (EXIF, IPTC, XMP, C2PA). Without this, we cannot read image metadata.

menu

Context Menus

Adds a "Detect AI Image" option to the right-click menu when you click on any image.

save

Storage

Saves your settings (auto-scan toggle, sensitivity, badge threshold) and scan count locally on your device using Chrome's built-in storage API. API credentials you enter for Deep Scan are also stored here, synced via your Chrome profile.

tab

Active Tab

Required to communicate scan results between the background service worker and the content script running on the active page.

database Data Storage

All extension data — including your settings, scan count, and any API keys you input — is stored locally via chrome.storage.sync and chrome.storage.local. Settings are synchronized across your signed-in Chrome browsers using Google's native sync service. We do not have access to this data.

block Analytics & Tracking

AI Image Detector does not use any third-party analytics, tracking pixels, cookies, advertising networks, or telemetry of any kind. Outside of the optional Deep Scan feature, the extension makes zero network requests.
