Modern Dark Mode is a Chrome extension that applies dark themes to websites using intelligent CSS filters. It operates entirely on your device. We do not collect, store, or transmit any personal data. There are no accounts, no sign-ups, no external servers, and no analytics. Your browsing activity and preferences stay completely private.

Modern Dark Mode does not collect any personal information, browsing history, analytics data, usage statistics, or any other data of any kind. The extension makes zero network requests and has no ability to transmit data externally.

key Permissions & Why We Need Them

Modern Dark Mode requires the following Chrome permissions to function. Each permission is used solely for the purposes described below:

Storage

Save your settings (dark mode enabled/disabled, brightness, contrast, schedule settings, excluded sites list) locally on your device using Chrome's built-in storage API. This data never leaves your browser.

tab

ActiveTab

Access the currently active tab to apply or remove dark mode styling when you click the extension icon or use the keyboard shortcut. This permission only activates when you interact with the extension.

Scripting

Inject CSS filters into web pages to apply the dark theme effect. This is the core functionality that transforms bright websites into dark-themed versions.

tabs

Tabs

Communicate with open tabs to toggle dark mode across all tabs when using the keyboard shortcut (Alt+Shift+D) and to check if a site is on your exclusion list.

language

Host Permissions (All URLs)

Apply dark mode styling to any website you visit. This permission allows the extension to inject CSS on all sites. Despite this broad permission, the extension only modifies visual appearance locally and never reads or transmits page content.

database Data Storage

All data generated by Modern Dark Mode — including your settings (brightness, contrast, sepia, grayscale), schedule preferences, and excluded sites list — is stored locally on your device via chrome.storage.sync. This is a sandboxed storage area built into Chrome that is only accessible by the extension itself. No data is ever transmitted to external servers.

Modern Dark Mode does not use any third-party services, analytics tools, tracking pixels, advertising networks, or external APIs. The extension operates completely offline after installation and makes zero network requests of its own.

settings How It Works

Modern Dark Mode applies CSS filter inversion to darken web pages while preserving images and videos in their original colors. All processing happens entirely within your browser. The extension does not read, analyze, or transmit any page content. It simply applies visual styling rules to make pages easier on your eyes.
