Concept site Truebore Precision is a fictional CNC machine shop, designed and built by Patrick Bushe to show what I make for CNC machine shops. Fictional, by Patrick Bushe

What we can hold, in what, and how big.

Pick your material and the tightest tolerance on your drawing. The table crosses out the processes that can’t do it.

All 6 processes fit
Processes by tolerance, largest part, lead time and material

Surface grinding ±0.002 mm 600 x 300 mm 5 to 7 days

Sample Tolerances are what each process holds on a typical feature. Lead times are for a new part after you approve the quote.

The processes

01

5-axis milling

Complex housings and brackets cut in one setup, so features that face five ways stay true to each other.

Machines
4 five-axis mills
Tolerance
±0.005 mm
Largest part
500 x 400 x 350 mm
Typical parts
Sensor housings, manifolds, impellers
02

3-axis milling

Plates, fixtures and prismatic parts, from one prototype to a few thousand on pallet changers.

Machines
8 vertical mills
Tolerance
±0.010 mm
Largest part
1000 x 500 x 500 mm
Typical parts
Fixture plates, enclosures, mounts
03

Swiss turning

Small, long, thin turned parts held close the whole length, with milled flats and cross holes in the same cycle.

Machines
3 Swiss lathes
Tolerance
±0.005 mm
Largest part
32 mm bar, 300 mm long
Typical parts
Pins, shafts, instrument parts
04

CNC turning

Bushings, flanges and spacers, with live tooling for bolt holes and keyways so they skip the mill.

Machines
4 turning centers with live tools
Tolerance
±0.010 mm
Largest part
350 mm diameter, 600 mm long
Typical parts
Bushings, flanges, spacers
05

Wire EDM

Sharp inside corners, hardened steel and thin walls that a cutter would push around.

Machines
2 wire EDMs
Tolerance
±0.003 mm
Largest part
400 x 300 x 200 mm
Typical parts
Punches, splines, gear profiles
06

Surface grinding

Flat and parallel to two microns after heat treat, for gauge blocks, wear plates and tooling.

Machines
1 surface grinder
Tolerance
±0.002 mm
Largest part
600 x 300 mm
Typical parts
Wear plates, gauge parts, die sets

Finishing, handled

Bead blast and passivation in house. Anodize and black oxide through two local finishers we audit every year, with their certs in your box.

  • Bead blast
  • Anodize Type II
  • Hard anodize Type III
  • Passivate
  • Black oxide
