Outlook Dark Mode: Desktop, Web & Mobile (2026)
Outlook has dark mode on every platform, but the switch is in a different place in each one — and there is a separate toggle for darkening the email you are actually reading. Here is where every setting lives.
Outlook’s dark mode has two layers: the app frame (folders, ribbon, toolbars) and the reading pane (the email itself). Turning on dark mode darkens the frame; a small sun/moon icon flips the message background too. We will hit both on each platform.
Outlook on the web (outlook.com / Microsoft 365)
- Click the gear icon (top right) to open Settings.
- Go to General → Appearance and choose Dark.
- Reading an email, click the sun/moon icon at the top of the message to darken the message body too.
New Outlook for Windows & Mac
Open Settings (gear) → General → Appearance and pick Dark. Same as the web, since new Outlook shares that engine. Use the message sun/moon toggle to flip the reading pane.
Classic Outlook for Windows
Go to File → Office Account → Office Theme and choose Black (or Use system setting). To keep the email body white while the app is dark, tick File → Options → General → “Never change the message background color.”
Outlook mobile app (iPhone & Android)
Tap your profile picture → Settings (gear) → Appearance and choose Dark, or System to follow your phone.
Want every other site to match Outlook’s dark look? Most of the web still ignores your system theme — a browser extension like Modern Dark Mode forces dark mode onto the sites that never added it.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my Outlook email still white in dark mode?
Dark mode darkens the Outlook frame, but the message body has a separate control. While reading an email, click the sun/moon icon at the top of the message to flip the reading pane to dark. In classic Outlook, the "Never change the message background color" option controls this.
How do I turn on dark mode in Outlook on the web?
Click the gear icon at the top right, go to General > Appearance, and select Dark. Then use the sun/moon icon inside an open email to darken the message itself.
Does Outlook dark mode sync across devices?
No. Dark mode is set per app, so you turn it on separately in Outlook web, desktop, and the mobile app. Each can also be set to follow the system theme.
Dark mode beyond Outlook
Outlook is easy — most websites are the problem. Modern Dark Mode forces a clean dark theme onto every site in your browser, so your whole screen matches, not just your inbox.
