Pi-hole and similar DNS blockers protect every device on your network, which a browser extension can't do. But they can only block whole domains, so they can't hide the empty boxes ads leave behind, or remove ads that come from the same servers as the content, such as YouTube's video ads. A browser extension like Ultimate Adblocker can: it blocks requests by address, hides ad boxes with each site's hiding rules, and removes ads from YouTube's video data. When a site breaks, you pause that site in one click instead of editing a network allowlist. Plenty of people run both.
