Freelance web designers charge anywhere from $15 an hour to well over $100, and many won’t give you an hourly rate at all. Here’s what the published numbers say, why they vary so much, and how hourly and project pricing compare when you’re the one paying.

Upwork’s figures come from its own global marketplace, so they include designers in countries with much lower living costs (Upwork). The Bureau of Labor Statistics figure is what US employees earn, not what freelancers bill. The BLS also reports a median of $104,000 a year for web and digital interface designers, and that 13% of them are self-employed.
Why freelancers charge more than employees earn
An employee’s wage doesn’t include the costs a freelancer pays alone: finding clients, admin, software, health insurance, self-employment tax, and weeks between projects. That’s why a freelancer’s hourly rate sits well above an employee’s hourly pay for the same skills.
Hourly vs project pricing
Hourly pricing works for small fixes, updates, and open-ended work. The catch is that you don’t know the total until the job is done, and every round of feedback adds to it.
Project pricing is one price for an agreed scope. You know the cost before work starts, and the designer carries the risk if it takes longer. Most experienced freelancers quote full websites this way, and some won’t quote hourly for a new site at all.
What drives the price
- Pages and templates. A five-page site and a site with fifty pages built from a few templates are very different jobs.
- Custom design or a theme. Adapting a theme is faster. Designing from scratch costs more and fits your brand.
- Selling online. Stores add products, checkout, shipping, and testing.
- Integrations. Booking systems, CRMs, and payment tools each add work.
- Content. Copywriting and photography are often not included unless you ask.
- Experience. A designer with a strong portfolio charges for fewer mistakes and faster decisions.
