Claude has a free plan and paid plans from $17 to $200 a month for individuals, plus Team and Enterprise plans for companies. Here is what each costs as of September 2026, what you actually get, and how to choose.

Which plan should you get?
- Start with Free and upgrade when you keep hitting the limits.
- Pro if you use Claude most days, or want Claude Code for programming. Every paid plan also includes Claude in Chrome, the browser extension.
- Max if you regularly run out of Pro's usage, usually because of long projects or heavy coding.
- Team for a business, so accounts, billing, and data belong to the company instead of individuals.
Claude Pro vs Max
The difference is mostly usage. Max gives you about 5 or 20 times more usage than Pro, higher output limits, and priority access when demand is high. If you rarely hit Pro's limits, Max isn't worth the extra money.
What about the Claude API?
Developers building apps don't use these subscriptions. They pay through Anthropic's API, billed by the amount of text processed (tokens), at prices that depend on the model. If you're building a business tool on Claude, the API cost is usually small next to the cost of building it; custom AI development covers that side.
How Claude's price compares
Claude Pro at $20 a month matches ChatGPT Plus at $20 and Google AI Pro at $19.99. The top tiers line up too: Claude Max at $100 or $200, ChatGPT Pro at $100 (new $200 sign-ups are paused), and Google AI Ultra at $99.99 or $199.99. So the choice comes down to which assistant works best for you, not price. See Gemini vs ChatGPT for the other two.
How I use it
I use Claude every day, mostly through Claude Code for building software, alongside OpenAI's Codex. If you're curious about that side, how to choose an AI coding agent covers it.
