How to Learn AI in 2026: The Best Courses and Certifications

You don’t need a computer science degree to get good at AI. Most people need one solid free course, a few weeks of using AI on their own work, and maybe one certification if their job calls for it. Here’s what’s worth your time, what it costs, and a simple plan.

The short answer

Start with a free, non-technical course to understand what AI can and can't do. Then learn by using it every day on your actual work. Certifications mostly matter for cloud and IT careers; for everyone else, being able to show what you've done with AI counts for more.

First, pick your goal

  • Use AI at work: you want to write, research, analyze, and automate faster. Start with the free beginner courses below.
  • Build with AI: you want to make apps, agents, or tools. Add the builder courses and learn an AI coding agent.
  • Get certified: you work, or want to work, with cloud platforms like AWS, Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud. Look at the certifications further down.

The best free AI courses for beginners

If you want to build with AI

  • fast.ai Practical Deep Learning: a free, hands-on course for people who can already code a little.
  • Hugging Face courses: free courses on large language models and AI agents.
  • An AI coding agent: the fastest way to learn is to build something real with one. See how to choose an AI coding agent.

AI certifications worth knowing

CertificationExam feeWho it’s for
AWS Certified AI Practitioner$100Anyone working with AI on Amazon Web Services, technical or not
Microsoft Azure AI Fundamentals$99Beginners on Microsoft Azure. Microsoft replaced exam AI-900 with AI-901 in 2026
Google Cloud Generative AI Leader$99Business and technical leaders adopting generative AI on Google Cloud

Fees are per attempt, checked in September 2026, and can vary by country. Several free courses, including Anthropic Academy, also give completion certificates, which are good for your own record but aren't the same as a proctored exam.

Are AI certifications worth it?

For cloud, IT, and data roles at companies that run on AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud, a fundamentals certification is a cheap, recognized signal. For most other jobs, hiring managers care more about what you can do: a workflow you automated, a tool you built, or time you saved your team. A certification plus one real example beats either alone.

A simple 30-day plan

  1. Week 1: finish Elements of AI or AI For Everyone.
  2. Week 2: use ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini every day for real tasks. The free AI prompt builder helps you ask well.
  3. Week 3: pick one repetitive task at work and use AI to speed it up or automate it. AI vs automation explains the options.
  4. Week 4: write up what you did and what it saved. If your job calls for it, book a certification exam.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best AI course for beginners?

Elements of AI, from the University of Helsinki, is a strong free starting point with no math or programming. AI For Everyone from DeepLearning.AI is another good option, especially for people who manage teams.

Are there free AI certifications?

Several free courses, like Anthropic Academy, give completion certificates. Professional certifications from AWS, Microsoft, and Google Cloud have exam fees, usually $99 to $100 per attempt.

Which AI certification is best?

The one that matches the platform your employer uses: AWS Certified AI Practitioner for Amazon Web Services, Azure AI Fundamentals for Microsoft, or Generative AI Leader for Google Cloud.

How long does it take to learn AI?

You can learn to use AI well at work in a few weeks: one short course plus daily practice. Building AI systems takes months, and deep technical expertise takes years.

Do I need to code to learn AI?

No. Using AI tools well needs no coding. Building your own AI apps usually does, though AI coding agents make it far more accessible than it used to be.
