Why Is My Phone in Dark Mode? (And How to Fix It)
A phone that goes dark by itself is almost never broken. One of four settings is doing it, and each has a quick fix. Here is how to find which one flipped and switch back to a bright screen — permanently.
Dark mode turning on unexpectedly comes down to four culprits: the theme setting, an automatic schedule, battery saver, or a single app’s own theme. Work through them in order.
1. The dark theme is simply on
iPhone: Settings → Display & Brightness → tap Light. Android: Settings → Display → turn off Dark theme (or Dark mode on Samsung).
2. A schedule keeps flipping it at night
If it goes dark every evening, a sunset schedule is on. iPhone: Settings → Display & Brightness → turn off Automatic. Android: Settings → Display → Dark theme → turn off Schedule.
3. Battery saver forced it on
Low Power / Battery Saver mode can switch the phone to dark to save power, especially on OLED screens. If your phone went dark when the battery got low, that is why — charge it, or turn battery saver off in Settings → Battery. It will go light again once the saver turns off.
4. Only one app is dark
If the system looks normal but a single app is dark, that app has its own theme. Open the app’s Settings and set its Theme/Appearance to Light instead of Dark or System.
And if the opposite is true — you like dark and want websites to stop showing up white — Modern Dark Mode forces dark mode on any site in desktop Chrome.
Frequently asked questions
Why did my phone suddenly switch to dark mode?
Usually one of four things: dark theme was toggled on, a sunset schedule turned it on automatically, battery saver switched it to save power, or a single app has its own dark theme. Check them in that order.
Does battery saver turn on dark mode?
It can. On many Android phones and on iPhone, Low Power / Battery Saver mode darkens the interface to reduce battery use on OLED screens. Turning battery saver off returns it to your normal theme.
How do I stop my phone going dark at night?
Turn off the schedule. On iPhone: Settings > Display & Brightness > turn off Automatic. On Android: Settings > Display > Dark theme > turn off Schedule.
Actually want dark mode — just done right?
If the fix you want is dark websites, not a dark phone, Modern Dark Mode gives you a clean, per-site dark theme on desktop Chrome without forcing it everywhere.
