Which check mark to use
✓ (U+2713, check mark) is the plain one. It takes the color of the text around it, which makes it the safest choice for documents, spreadsheets, and web pages. ✔ (U+2714, heavy check mark) is the bolder version of the same idea. ✅ (U+2705) is an emoji, so it shows as a colored button that looks different on every phone and computer, which is fine in a chat and odd in a formal document.
☑ puts the check inside a box, and ☐ is the empty box to pair it with when you're making a checklist by hand. For the opposite answer, ✗ and ✘ match the plain and heavy check marks, while ❌ and ❎ are their emoji versions. √ is the square root sign. It looks like a check in some fonts, but screen readers and search treat it as math, so pick ✓ instead.
If a symbol shows as a box
A box or a question mark means the font on that device has no drawing for the character. 🗸 and 🗹 are the most likely to fail, because few fonts include them. ✓ and ✔ are in almost every font. On a web page, don't rely on a check mark alone to show that something passed or failed: a screen reader may read the symbol's name or skip it, so put a word such as "Done" next to it.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I type a check mark on Windows or Mac?
On Windows, press the Windows key and the period key to open the emoji panel, then search for check. In Microsoft Word you can also type 2713 and press Alt+X to turn it into ✓. On a Mac, press Control + Command + Space to open the Character Viewer and search for check mark.
What is the HTML code for a check mark?
Use ✓ or the named entity ✓ for ✓, ✔ for ✔, and ✅ for ✅. In a CSS content property, write the escape \2713. Each card on this page shows the codes for its symbol, and clicking one copies it.
Why does ✔ sometimes turn into a green or colored emoji?
✔ (U+2714) and ☑ (U+2611) have both a plain text form and an emoji form. Adding the invisible variation selector U+FE0F asks for the emoji form, which is what the ✔️ and ☑️ cards copy, and some apps switch to it on their own. ✅ (U+2705) always displays as an emoji.
How do I put a check mark in Excel or Google Sheets?
Type =UNICHAR(10003) in a cell to get ✓, or =UNICHAR(10004) for the heavier ✔. You can also paste a symbol copied from this page straight into a cell.
