How the grouped data mean calculator works

When raw observations have been summarized into classes, the grouped mean approximates each class by its midpoint and weights that midpoint by class frequency. This calculator multiplies each paired midpoint and frequency, adds the products, and divides by total frequency. It exposes both totals so transcription errors can be checked before relying on the estimated average.

The default midpoints 10, 20, 30 have frequencies 2, 3, 5. Their weighted products are 20, 60, and 150, totaling 230 across 10 observations. The verified grouped mean is therefore 23. A plain average of the three midpoints would be 20 and would incorrectly ignore the heavier final class.

Grouped means are estimates because every observation in a class is represented by one midpoint. Wider or uneven classes can hide substantial within-class structure. Midpoints and frequencies must align by position, frequencies cannot be negative, and their total must be positive.
