Compare mechanical and metric power ratings

Mechanical horsepower is common in American engine and motor ratings, while kilowatts are the SI-compatible power unit. Several horsepower definitions exist, so this page explicitly uses mechanical horsepower. That choice matters when comparing manufacturer specifications that may instead quote metric, electrical, or boiler horsepower.

The default 100 mechanical horsepower converts to 74.57 kilowatts. In reverse, 100 kilowatts converts to 134.102 mechanical horsepower. The table provides useful rating comparisons, but it does not adjust for drivetrain loss or distinguish peak from continuous output.

Power values are converted locally and are not uploaded. The tool translates stated ratings and does not estimate speed, energy use, motor efficiency, torque, or safe operating load. Confirm the horsepower definition in the original specification before relying on a comparison.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many kilowatts are in one horsepower?

One mechanical horsepower equals approximately 0.7457 kilowatts.

Does this use metric horsepower?

No. It uses mechanical horsepower. Metric horsepower has a slightly different definition.

Can this predict vehicle performance?

No. Power conversion alone does not account for torque curves, gearing, mass, traction, or drivetrain losses.
