Stair Rise & Run Calculator
Enter total height to get the step count and rise per step.
Plan a comfortable staircase
A comfortable staircase depends on dividing the total height into steps of an even, easy rise. This calculator takes the floor-to-floor height and works out how many steps you need and exactly how tall each should be.
For a 290 cm rise, aiming near 18 cm per step gives 16 steps at about 18.1 cm each. The tool also suggests a tread depth using the classic rise-plus-run comfort rule.
Helpful and private
It targets a comfortable riser height, rounds to whole steps, and recomputes the exact rise, all in your browser. Always check local building codes for a real project.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is the step count found?
It divides the total rise by a comfortable target riser height (about 18 cm / 7 inches) and rounds to whole steps, then recalculates the exact rise per step.
What is a comfortable riser?
Roughly 16–19 cm (6.5–7.5 inches) per step is comfortable for most stairs; codes set limits, so check local rules for a real build.
What about the run?
A common rule pairs each riser with a tread depth so that twice the rise plus the run is about 63–65 cm; the tool suggests a matching tread.
