VAT, both directions
VAT can be added to a net price or extracted from a gross one. At 20%, £100 net becomes £120 gross; to strip it back, divide the gross by 1.2, not by 0.8.
It handles both directions cleanly, which matters at tax time: extracting the VAT already included in a gross receipt is a different sum from adding VAT to a net price.
