VO2 Max Estimator

Estimate your aerobic fitness from resting and max heart rate.

A window into aerobic fitness

VO2 max is the gold-standard measure of aerobic fitness — how much oxygen your body can use at peak effort. The Uth–Sørensen method estimates it from the ratio of your maximum to resting heart rate, no treadmill test required.

A 30-year-old with a resting rate of 60 estimates around 48, a solid recreational-athlete level. A lower resting pulse for your age points to a higher VO2 max, which is why endurance training drives resting heart rate down.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is VO2 max estimated?

This uses the Uth–Sørensen method, which estimates VO2 max as 15.3 times the ratio of maximum to resting heart rate. It needs only your age and resting pulse.

What is a good VO2 max?

Values rise with fitness: untrained adults sit in the 30s, recreational athletes in the 40s, and elite endurance athletes above 60.

How accurate is the heart-rate method?

It is a convenient estimate, not a lab test. A proper VO2 max measurement uses a graded exercise test with gas analysis.
