Work Done Calculator

Find mechanical work from force, distance, and angle.

Force over a distance

In physics, work is done when a force moves something along its direction. The formula multiplies force by distance and by the cosine of the angle between them, so a sideways push does no work.

Pushing with 50 N over 10 m in line with the motion does 500 joules of work. Angle the force away and the work drops, reaching zero at a right angle.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the formula?

Work equals force times distance times the cosine of the angle between them.

Why the angle?

Only the component of force along the motion does work. At 90 degrees, no work is done.

What units?

Newtons and metres give work in joules.
