Newsletter sign-up pop-ups, the ones that ask for your email, are different from paywalls, and blocking them is fair game. Patrick Bushe's Ultimate Adblocker hides them with its "Pop-ups and app banners" setting, which is on by default and also hides "allow notifications" prompts and "open in the app" banners. It uses community filter lists, so a few new pop-ups may slip through until the lists catch up.
