How To Check If Instagram Image Is AI Generated

Patrick Bushe · May 1, 2026

Instagram makes this harder than most sites, because it removes almost all metadata from photos when they're uploaded. That means file-based checks rarely help, and you'll lean on Meta's own labels, the account and the image's history.

Look for the "AI info" label

Meta adds an "AI info" label to posts on Instagram, Facebook and Threads when it detects industry-standard signals in the file, such as Content Credentials or IPTC tags from AI tools, or when the creator discloses it. Tap the label to see more. Missing labels mean little: the signals are easy to strip, and many creators don't disclose.

Check the account

  • Does the account post a lot of flawless, similar-looking images with no behind-the-scenes shots or videos?
  • Is it new, with followers that look bought?
  • Do the bio or captions mention Midjourney, Stable Diffusion or "AI art"?
  • Do comments point out it's AI?

Search for the original

Screenshot the image and run it through Google Lens or TinEye. You may find the original on an AI art site, a stock library or a photographer's portfolio, which answers the question quickly.

Look at the details

Zoom in on hands, text, jewelry, hair edges and background objects. AI images often have small inconsistencies there, though the best ones won't.

Why metadata tools struggle here

AI Image Detector (made by Patrick Bushe, who runs this site) can read metadata on images on Instagram's site, but because Instagram strips it, the usual result is "No Metadata Found." That isn't a sign the image is real. The check is more useful on the original file, if you can find one elsewhere.
