How Much Does an AI Agent Cost? (2026 Pricing Guide)

The honest answer is anywhere from about $30 a month to tens of thousands of dollars. The spread comes down to three things: whether you buy an off-the-shelf tool or have one built, how much the agent talks to people, and how many of your own systems it has to connect to. Here is what each option costs in 2026, how the pricing works, and the costs that never show up on a price page.

The short answer

These are typical 2026 ranges from published pricing across AI agent, voice agent, and AI receptionist platforms, plus custom development quotes. Your number depends on volume and on how much the agent has to connect to.

What you are paying forTypical 2026 cost
Off-the-shelf chat agent for your websiteTens to a few hundred dollars a month
Off-the-shelf AI receptionistAbout $29 to $500 a month; most small businesses pay $49 to $150
Voice agent platform you configure yourselfAbout $0.05 to $0.25 per minute of calls, plus a phone line
Managed voice agent with integrationsAbout $0.25 to $0.50 per minute
Custom-built agentAbout $2,500 to $45,000 one-time; one focused workflow is often $7,000 to $15,000
Running a custom agentAbout $200 to $1,000 a month

How AI agents are priced

Almost every AI agent is sold one of four ways, and the model matters as much as the price.

  • Flat subscription. A fixed monthly price, usually with a cap on minutes, calls, or conversations. Easy to budget, but overage charges can add up once the agent gets busy.
  • Pay per use. You pay per minute, per call, or per conversation. Cheap when volume is low and it scales on its own, but the bill grows as the agent does more of the work.
  • Pay per outcome. Some platforms charge per resolved conversation or per booked appointment. You only pay when it works, though each outcome usually costs more than raw usage would.
  • Custom build plus a monthly fee. A one-time build that fits your workflow and systems, then a monthly fee for hosting, usage, and upkeep. It costs more up front, but it does exactly what your business needs.

How much does an AI agent cost per month?

Monthly bills are made of the same parts: the platform or subscription fee, usage (minutes, messages, or conversations), a phone number and call charges if it takes calls, the AI model usage behind it, and upkeep. For a voice agent handling 200 to 500 calls a month at about three minutes each, published pricing puts most small businesses around $400 to $700 a month once things settle. A text chat agent on your website usually costs less, because text is cheaper to process than voice.

One cost appears on no price page at all: the time someone on your team spends checking what the agent did. Budget a few hours a week at first, and less once it is tuned.

What it costs to run a custom AI agent

If you have an agent built, the build is a one-time cost, but it is not the last one. Running costs cover AI model usage, hosting, phone lines if it takes calls, and monitoring. Most small businesses spend roughly $200 to $1,000 a month to keep a custom agent running, and it is sensible to budget 5 to 10% of the build cost each year for updates, because your prices, policies, and tools change over time.

Cost by type of agent

Voice and phone agents

Priced mostly by the minute, so cost rises with call volume and call length, and with add-ons like call transfers, recordings, and CRM updates. An agent that answers calls and books appointments is the most common starting point for small businesses. Here is what an AI receptionist involves.

Customer service agents

Usually priced per conversation or per resolved conversation, or bundled into a help desk plan. The price depends on how many conversations it handles and how well it is connected to your order, product, and account information. The more it can look up, the more it can actually resolve.

Sales and appointment-setting agents

Priced like chat or voice agents, plus whatever it takes to connect to your forms, calendar, and CRM. The value is speed: replying to a new lead in seconds instead of hours. Here is how an AI appointment setter works.

Build or buy?

Buy an off-the-shelf tool when your needs are standard: answering common questions, taking messages, and booking into a calendar the tool already supports. It is the cheapest way to start. Build when the agent has to work inside your specific systems, follow your own rules, or handle a workflow no product covers. Many businesses start with an off-the-shelf tool and move to a custom build once they know exactly what they need. In a consult, I will tell you if an off-the-shelf tool is enough.

The costs price pages leave out

Your own setup time, usage overages, phone numbers and setup fees (some providers charge $50 to $200 just to open an account), integrations with your other tools, the time spent checking the agent's work, ongoing maintenance, and the occasional cost of a mistake. None of these are scams, but together they are the gap between the price page and the bill. The full list is in the hidden costs of AI agents.

How to get a real number

Price pages give you a range. A real number needs three things: your volume (calls, chats, or leads a month), the tools the agent has to connect to, and the share of the work it should take on. Write those down, run them through the calculator above, and get two or three quotes before you commit to anything.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an AI agent cost?

In 2026, off-the-shelf AI agents typically cost from about $30 to $500 a month, while a custom-built agent usually costs $2,500 to $45,000 to build plus roughly $200 to $1,000 a month to run. Where you land depends on call or chat volume and how much the agent has to connect to.

How much does an AI agent cost per month?

Most small businesses pay from about $50 to $1,000 a month, depending on whether it is an off-the-shelf tool or a custom agent and how busy it is. Voice agents cost more than chat agents because they are billed by the minute.

How much does an AI voice agent cost?

Voice agents are usually billed per minute: about $0.05 to $0.25 a minute on platforms you configure yourself, and about $0.25 to $0.50 a minute for managed services with integrations. A small business taking a few hundred calls a month typically pays a few hundred dollars.

Is a custom AI agent worth it for a small business?

It can be when the agent takes on a real share of a role and has to work inside your own systems. Compare the full cost of the work it takes on with its build and running costs. If it pays back within a year, it is usually worth a closer look.

Are there free AI agents?

Some chat tools have free tiers, but they are limited in volume and features, and voice agents always cost something per minute. Free tiers are a good way to test the idea before paying for anything.
