Override Force-Dark on Android: What It Does and How to Use It

Override force-dark is a hidden Android setting that makes apps without their own dark theme turn dark anyway. It can work surprisingly well, and it can also make some apps look broken. Here’s what it does, how to switch it on or off, and when to leave it alone.

What override force-dark does

Android 10 added a system-wide dark theme, and with it a developer option called Override force-dark. Normally, only apps that have their own dark theme go dark when you turn dark theme on. With override force-dark on, Android also darkens apps that don't have one, working out which parts of the screen are backgrounds and which are text, and swapping their colors.

It's an automatic guess, not a real design. Apps with simple layouts usually look fine. Apps with lots of images, custom colors, or unusual layouts can end up with odd colors or hard-to-read text.

How to turn it on

  1. Turn on Developer options. Open Settings, then About phone, and tap Build number seven times. On Samsung phones it's under About phone, then Software information. Enter your PIN if asked.
  2. Open Developer options. On Pixel and most phones it's in Settings, then System. On Samsung it appears at the bottom of Settings.
  3. Find Override force-dark. It's usually in the Hardware accelerated rendering section. The quickest way is to search Settings for "force dark", since some phones name it slightly differently.
  4. Turn it on, and make sure Dark theme is on in Settings, then Display.
  5. Close and reopen apps so they pick up the change.

What can go wrong

  • Logos, icons, or images come out with inverted or strange colors.
  • Some text ends up low contrast against its new background.
  • Apps can opt out of force-dark, and some, like games and apps that draw their own screens, ignore it.

Developer options also hold settings that can affect performance and battery, so change only this one and leave the rest alone.

How to turn it off

Go back to Developer options and turn Override force-dark off, then reopen your apps. If things are still dark, the system dark theme is probably on: see how to turn off dark mode on Android. Some apps also have their own theme setting that overrides the system one.

What about websites?

Override force-dark affects apps, not the web pages you open in Chrome. Chrome has its own theme setting, and whether websites get darkened depends on your Chrome version and whether the site supports dark mode. On a computer, the chrome://flags force-dark setting or a dark mode extension does the same job for websites.

Frequently asked questions

Is override force-dark safe to use?

Yes. It only changes how apps are drawn, and you can turn it off at any time. The worst case is an app that looks wrong until you switch it back.

Why does force dark not work on some apps?

Apps can opt out of force-dark, and apps that draw their own screens, such as games, ignore it. Those apps need their own dark theme.

Where is override force-dark on Samsung phones?

Turn on Developer options by tapping Build number seven times in About phone, then Software information. Developer options appears at the bottom of Settings; search it for "force dark".

Does forcing dark mode save battery?

On phones with OLED screens, dark pixels use less power, so darker app screens can save a little battery. How much depends on the app and your screen brightness.
