What does the alt text auditor do?

What counts as an alt text problem?
It flags img tags with no alt attribute, alt="" (empty), alt text longer than 125 characters, and the same alt text used on more than one image.
Is an empty alt attribute always wrong?
No. alt="" is correct for purely decorative images because screen readers skip them. The auditor lists empties so you can confirm each one really is decorative.
Can it scan a live URL?
No. Paste the page HTML (View Source or a CMS export works). It parses the markup with the browser's DOMParser, so only img tags present in that HTML are checked.
