Pressure Calculator

Find pressure from force and area.

Force over an area

Pressure is how concentrated a force is: the same push over a tiny area produces enormous pressure, while spread over a large area it barely presses. It is force divided by area.

A 500 N force on 0.01 square metres is 50,000 pascals, or 50 kPa. Shrink the area and the pressure climbs, which is the principle behind knives and nails.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is pressure?

Force spread over an area — force divided by area. A small area concentrates force into high pressure.

What units?

Newtons and square metres give pressure in pascals. The tool also shows kilopascals and psi.

Why does area matter?

The same force over a smaller area gives higher pressure, which is why sharp points and high heels press hard.
