Steps to Distance Estimator

Convert a step count into distance using your stride length, or an estimate from your height.

Turn steps into real distance

A step count from a phone or watch is only meaningful once you know how far it actually took you. Distance is simply your number of steps multiplied by your stride length, and this tool does that conversion into both kilometres and miles.

If you haven’t measured your stride, it estimates one from your height — walking stride is about 0.42 times height — so 10,000 steps for a 175 cm person works out to roughly 7.4 km, or about 4.6 miles. Entering a measured stride makes the result more precise.

Private and instant

The calculation updates as you type and runs entirely in your browser, so your activity data never leaves your device.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is distance estimated from steps?

Distance equals step count times stride length. If you don’t know your stride, the tool estimates it from your height (about 0.415 × height for women and 0.415 × height for walking), then multiplies by your steps.

What is a typical stride length?

Walking stride is roughly 0.4–0.45 times your height; running stride is longer. Measuring your own over a known distance is more accurate than the height estimate.

How many steps is a mile?

Around 2,000–2,500 steps for most adults, depending on height and pace. Enter your details here for a figure based on your own stride.

Is my data uploaded?

No. The estimate runs in your browser and nothing you enter is sent anywhere.
