Older ad blockers ran their own code on every request a page made. Manifest V3 extensions such as Ultimate Adblocker hand their filter rules to Chrome's built-in declarativeNetRequest engine instead, so Chrome checks each request itself. Blocking ads and trackers usually makes pages faster overall, because the browser downloads and runs less: in one test on weather.com's homepage in October 2026, the page made 842 network requests without the extension and 125 with it. The extension does run small scripts on pages to hide ad boxes and cookie banners, but they're light.
