How To Check If Infographic Is AI Generated

Patrick Bushe · May 1, 2026

AI image tools can now produce infographics that look professional at a glance. The bigger risk isn't how they were made but whether the information is right: AI-made infographics often contain invented numbers, wrong labels and charts that don't match their data.

Check the data first

  1. Look for a source. A trustworthy infographic names where its numbers came from. No source is a warning sign, however polished it looks.
  2. Find the original data. Search for the statistic and see whether the named source actually published it.
  3. Check the math. Do percentages add up to 100? Do bar heights match the numbers? Does the pie chart match the labels?
  4. Check dates. Old figures presented as current are common, AI or not.

Visual clues of AI generation

  • Small text that turns into gibberish when you zoom in.
  • Icons that are almost recognizable but slightly wrong.
  • Chart axes with no numbers, or numbers that don't follow a scale.
  • Decorative details that serve no purpose.
  • Inconsistent fonts within the same section.

Check the file

If you have the original file, AI Image Detector (made by Patrick Bushe, who runs this site) reads its metadata in Chrome and flags AI generator names, Content Credentials or AI tags. Infographics made in design tools such as Canva or Illustrator may show that software instead. Shared copies usually have no metadata left, which doesn't tell you either way.

Find who made it

A reverse image search with Google Lens can lead to the original publisher. Infographics from research organizations, government agencies and established publications are easier to verify than ones from anonymous accounts.

When it's fine

AI-assisted design isn't a problem in itself. An infographic with accurate, sourced data that was laid out with AI help is more useful than a hand-drawn one with invented figures.
