AI Image Detector Free Chrome Extension

AI Image Detector (made by Patrick Bushe, who runs this site) is a free Chrome extension that checks images for signs of AI generation by reading the information stored inside the image file. Here's what it does and where its limits are.

How it works

• Right-click check: right-click any image and choose "🔍 Detect AI Image" to see a verdict and the details behind it.
• Auto-scan: on by default, it checks images on the pages you visit (50 pixels and larger) and adds a small "🤖 AI" badge to likely AI images. Click the badge for details.
• Sensitivity: choose Strict, Balanced or Lenient in settings.

What it looks for

• IPTC tags that mark content as made by AI, and the "AI system used" field.
• AI tool names, such as Midjourney or Stable Diffusion, in the Software or creator fields.
• Generation settings that Stable Diffusion apps save in PNG files, such as the prompt.
• Content Credentials (C2PA) entries.
• Camera details, such as make, model and exposure, that suggest a real photo.

Verdicts range from "AI Generated" and "Likely AI Generated" through "Uncertain" to "Likely Real Photo," or "No Metadata Found."

Privacy

The standard check runs in your browser. The extension downloads the image from the site you're on to read it, and doesn't send it to Bushe.co or any detection service. An optional Deep Scan uses your own SightEngine or Hive API key and does upload the image to that service for analysis.

What it can't do

• Stripped images: Instagram, Facebook, X and most social sites remove metadata, so the extension can't tell anything from their images without Deep Scan.
• Removed or faked metadata: anyone can strip or edit these fields.
• Content Credentials: it treats any Content Credentials as a strong AI signal, but some real photos carry them; check those on Content Credentials Verify.
• Images in data: or blob: addresses aren't supported.
