Free Dark Mode Extension That Doesn't Track Data
Patrick Bushe · May 1, 2026
Some free extensions collect browsing data, so it's worth checking what a dark mode extension does.
Modern Dark Mode is free, needs no account and has no analytics: it makes no network requests, and its settings (on/off, excluded sites, sliders and schedule) are stored in your browser. Chrome will still warn that it can "read and change all your data on all websites", because it has to add its style to every page you open; any extension that darkens every site needs that permission. Its code is a small amount of plain, readable JavaScript.
