How to Automatically Enable Dark Mode at Sunset in Browser

Patrick Bushe · May 1, 2026

Browsers don't switch websites to dark at sunset on their own, but an extension can do it on a schedule.

Modern Dark Mode uses clock times rather than actual sunset. In Advanced Settings, turn on "Auto-enable by schedule" and set the Active hours to around sunset where you live (the default is 6 pm to 8 am). Pages you open in that window turn dark, and pages outside it stay light; adjust the start time as the seasons change. If you'd rather follow the real sunset, macOS can switch its appearance automatically (choose Auto in Appearance settings), and sites that follow your system theme switch with it.
