How to Make Google Docs True Dark Mode on Desktop

Google Docs in a desktop browser has no dark mode for the page you type on.

Dark mode extensions struggle with it because Docs draws the document's text on a canvas rather than as normal page text. Modern Dark Mode darkens Docs' menus and toolbars, but it leaves canvases in their original colors, so the document itself can end up looking odd, for example dark text on a darkened page. If that happens, tick "Exclude this site" for docs.google.com. A workaround inside Docs is File > Page setup, where you can set a dark page color and then use light text, though that changes the document itself, including when it's printed or shared.
