Your contribution is a percentage of each paycheck, often boosted by an employer match up to a cap. Contributing 6% of a $60,000 salary is $3,600 a year, and a 50%-up-to-6% match adds $1,800 of free money on top.
Workers 50 and over can add catch-up contributions on top of the standard limit, and choosing a Roth 401(k) shifts when the tax is paid — both worth modelling before you set your rate.
An estimate, not tax advice
Annual IRS limits and your plan's specific match formula apply, so confirm both with your provider. Your salary and contribution rate stay in the browser and are never uploaded.
Frequently asked questions
How is the employer match worked out?
The match rate applies only to the part of your contribution up to the cap. With a 50% match capped at 6%, contributing 8% of $90,000 gets a match on 6% of pay: $90,000 × 6% × 50% = $2,700.
What goes in the "Match %, match cap %" box?
Two numbers separated by a comma: the match rate, then the salary percentage it stops at. "100, 4" means dollar-for-dollar up to 4% of pay; "50, 6" means 50 cents per dollar up to 6%.
Does it check the IRS contribution limit or catch-up contributions?
No. It multiplies salary by your percentage without capping it, so compare the "Your contribution" figure against this year's IRS elective deferral limit (plus catch-up if you are 50 or older) yourself.
