How to Keep Live Chat Widgets Active Without Getting Disconnected

You're waiting in a support chat, switch to another tab, and come back to "This chat has ended". Chats drop for a few predictable reasons, and most can be prevented.

Why chats disconnect

  • Inactivity timeouts: many chat services end a chat if you don't reply within a few minutes of an agent's message.
  • Background tabs: Chrome slows down tabs you aren't looking at, to save power, and Memory Saver can unload them entirely.
  • Your computer sleeping, which drops the connection.
  • Network changes, such as switching Wi-Fi or a VPN reconnecting.

Keep the chat connected

  1. Keep the site awake: in Settings → Performance, add the site under Always keep these sites active, so Memory Saver won't unload it.
  2. Put the chat in its own window: drag the tab out, and keep that window visible beside your work. Tabs in visible windows aren't slowed down the same way.
  3. Stop sleep during the chat: on Windows, set sleep to "Never" while plugged in, or on a Mac use the Battery or Energy settings.
  4. Stay on one network until the chat ends.

Don't miss the agent's reply

  • Allow notifications for the support site when it asks, so a new message pops up even when the tab is hidden.
  • Many chat widgets play a sound. Keep the tab unmuted.
  • Reply briefly within the time limit if you need longer, such as "Still here, checking now".

What not to do

Don't use an auto-refresh or tab-rotation tool on a chat page. Reloading ends or restarts the chat, and moving to another page leaves it. AutoBrowser, for example, moves between bookmarked sites on a timer, which suits dashboards, not conversations. See keeping a web session alive for pages where reloading is safe.

If it drops anyway

  • Ask for, or download, a chat transcript at the start, and note any case or ticket number.
  • Many services email a transcript after the chat; check your inbox and spam folder.
  • When you reconnect, give the case number so you don't start from scratch.
  • For long issues, ask whether you can continue by email instead.

Keep notes while you wait

Write down order numbers, names and what the agent promised. Sticky Notes Anywhere keeps a note right on the support page, stored in your browser.
