Using Auto-Browse for Ad Impression Verification

Ad verification means checking that ads actually appear where they were bought, look right and are seen by real people. It matters because ads are bought in automated auctions across thousands of sites, and mistakes and fraud are common. But some ways of checking create the very problems you're trying to avoid.

A warning first

Loading pages over and over to see your ads creates impressions, and those count as traffic. For advertisers, you pay for them. For publishers, repeatedly loading your own pages with ads can be flagged as invalid traffic and breach your ad network's policies. Never click your own ads.

How professional verification works

Large advertisers use verification companies such as Integral Ad Science and DoubleVerify. Their code runs with the ad and reports:

  • Whether the ad was viewable, meaning enough of it was on screen for long enough.
  • Whether the page was brand-safe.
  • Whether the viewer looked like a person or a bot.
  • Where in the world it was shown.

Oracle shut down its Moat measurement service in 2024, so many advertisers moved to these providers.

Previewing without impressions

  • Google Ads: the Ad Preview and Diagnosis tool shows how your search ads appear for a keyword and location, without creating an impression.
  • Meta: the ad preview in Ads Manager shows each placement.
  • Publishers on Google Ad Manager: the Publisher Console shows what's loading in each ad slot.

Spot checks for publishers

If you run a site with ads, it's worth checking that ad slots load and don't break layouts across your main page types after a design change. Keep it to a few visits.

AutoBrowser can play a folder of your own page bookmarks one after another in a single tab, so you can watch for empty slots or layout problems. It doesn't measure anything, and each load can count as an impression, so use it for a short visual check, not a long loop.

What to look for

  • Ad slots that stay empty or collapse.
  • Ads pushing content around as they load.
  • Ads overlapping text or buttons on phones.
  • Inappropriate ads next to your content; block categories in your ad settings.

Reports beat visits

Your ad platform's placement and delivery reports show where ads ran far more reliably than any number of manual visits. Review them weekly, exclude poor placements, and use verification services for big budgets. See how ad auctions and retargeting work.
