Switchback is a made-up brand. I designed and built it to show what a bike shop store can look like; the people, prices, results and reviews on it are samples.

The brief

Switchback is a made-up gravel and touring bike shop in Ojai that builds three steel bikes and sells bags, tires and tune-ups.

Frame size is the biggest worry when buying a bike online. Size charts list numbers, but riders can’t picture them.

The idea

The switchback

A switchback is a trail that zigzags up a hill. Section breaks are switchback lines with the climb marked, every bike carries a terrain profile, and the fit finder draws your frame to scale with your inseam on it. White, slate and one trail-blaze teal with topo lines; Red Hat Display with Red Hat Text.

Design decisions

Draw the fit

Enter height and inseam and the finder draws the frame to scale with your inseam line, the clearance over the top tube and a starting saddle height (0.883 × inseam).

From fit to bike

The fit finder links to the bike with your size already picked, and every bike page links back to the finder for anyone between sizes.

Bikes from their geometry

Every bike is drawn in code from its own size chart, so the pictures and the numbers always match.

What’s built

  • Fit finder that draws the frame to scale and picks the size
  • One size chart for every frame
  • Terrain profile on every bike
  • Bags, tires, parts and a tune-up you can book
  • Bag and demo checkout that sends nothing

Pages to try

Everything works in the browser. Forms and checkout don’t send anything.
