Sixforty Coffee is a made-up brand. I designed and built it to show what a coffee roaster store can look like; the people, prices, results and reviews on it are samples.

The brief

Sixforty is a made-up coffee roaster in Frogtown, Los Angeles.

Most people buying coffee online don’t know a natural process from a washed one, but they know when they drink it: a strong first cup, something lighter in the afternoon. The store sells by time of day and turns one-time buyers into subscribers.

The idea

The hour

Each coffee is named for the time of day it tastes best, and its bag is drawn as that hour’s sky. The home hero is the live sky over L.A. with a day scrubber, page heads take the current sky, subscriptions are set like an alarm, and buttons fill like a sunrise on hover. Unbounded with Rethink Sans.

Design decisions

Sell by the hour, not the origin

A short coffee finder asks when and how you drink coffee and points to one bag, instead of making people decode tasting notes.

Subscriptions set like an alarm

Pick a coffee, how often, the size and the grind. The alarm face takes that coffee’s sky, and the next three ship dates follow the real roast days.

Freshness in plain words

Roasted at 6:40 am, twice a week, with the roast day shown hour by hour on the roastery page.
