Freelancers wear every hat: doing the work, finding clients, billing and admin. These extensions and Chrome features cover the parts of the job that happen in the browser.
Time tracking and billing
- Toggl Track and Clockify both have extensions that add a timer button to tools like Trello, Asana and Google Docs, so tracking starts where you work.
- Meeting Cost Calculator shows a running cost for a meeting from the number of people and their average pay, a quick reminder of what an hour-long call is worth when you bill hourly.
Writing and client work
- A grammar checker such as Grammarly or LanguageTool catches mistakes in proposals and emails.
- Word Counter counts the words and characters in any text you select, useful for briefs with a word count and for checking pages you're writing for clients.
- Loom records short screen videos to explain work or feedback instead of writing long emails.
Keeping clients separate
Create a Chrome profile for each big client. Each one stays signed in to that client's Google account, Slack and project tools, with its own bookmarks. See how to use Chrome profiles.
For many tabs, Patrick Bushe's Tab Manager saves a set of tabs as a session you can reopen later, and puts idle tabs to sleep.
Focus
- A site blocker with a schedule keeps social media out of work hours.
- Sticky Notes Anywhere keeps quick notes on the page you're working on, such as a client's site or a draft.
Security
A password manager is essential when you hold logins for several clients. Use one with sharing, so clients can give you access without emailing passwords, and remove your access when a project ends.
Extensions on Android
Chrome for Android doesn't support extensions. Firefox for Android supports many Firefox add-ons, and a few other Android browsers have added limited extension support, but most freelancers keep extension-based work on a laptop.
Need a custom extension?
If your workflow needs something no extension does, such as a tool that pulls data from a client's system, a custom extension can be a small project. See Chrome extension development.
