The best dark mode for Kindle's web reader is the one built into it: the reader has its own color themes, including black. A browser extension can darken the rest of the site, but it can't do much for the book pages themselves.

Use the reader's own dark theme

  1. Open a book at read.amazon.com (Kindle for Web, formerly Kindle Cloud Reader).
  2. Open the reading settings from the Aa button in the toolbar.
  3. Choose the dark or black color theme. Sepia is a softer middle option.

The setting is saved for your next session. You can also change font size, line spacing and margins in the same menu.

Why extensions struggle with book pages

In recent versions, Kindle's web reader draws book pages as images rather than ordinary text. Dark mode extensions that keep images in their real colors, which is what you want on most sites, leave those pages white. Extensions that invert everything turn them dark, but also flip book covers and illustrations. That's why the built-in theme works better for reading.

Darkening the library and store pages

The library, store and account pages around the reader are ordinary web pages, and they're bright. Modern Dark Mode darkens them while keeping book covers in their real colors. Combined with the reader's black theme, the whole site stays dark.

"Matching your device theme"

If the reader doesn't follow your computer's light or dark setting, pick its theme once and it stays. For the rest of the web, Modern Dark Mode uses a schedule rather than your system's setting: pick the hours you want dark mode (say 7 pm to 7 am) to line it up with your device's automatic theme.

Other ways to read Kindle books in the dark

  • Kindle apps for phones, tablets and computers have their own dark themes.
  • Kindle e-readers with a front light are the most comfortable for long reading, and many have a dark mode too.

Comfort tips for night reading

  • Lower screen brightness to suit the room.
  • Use warmer colors in the evening (Night Light, Night Shift or a browser tint).
  • Make the text bigger rather than leaning in.
