Dark Mode for Google Maps Without Breaking Map Tiles

Short answer: the Google Maps apps for Android and iPhone have a dark theme, but the Google Maps website on a computer still doesn't have its own dark mode. On desktop you have to use a browser tool, and the trick is getting one that darkens the panels without wrecking the map colors.
Dark mode in the Google Maps apps
- Android: open Google Maps, tap your profile picture, then Settings, then Theme, and choose Always in dark theme or Same as device theme.
- iPhone: open Google Maps, tap your profile picture, then Settings, then Dark mode, and choose On or Same as device.
- Navigation at night: during turn-by-turn directions the map switches to a dark style after dark. On Android you can set this in the navigation settings under color scheme.
Why the desktop map breaks with dark mode tools
The Maps website draws the map as image tiles and a canvas, then puts panels, search results, and buttons on top. Chrome's forced dark flag and simple inversion extensions treat all of it the same, so the map colors flip: water turns brown, parks turn purple, roads glow, and satellite view becomes a photo negative.
Options that work on desktop
- A Maps-specific dark theme extension. A few extensions in the Chrome Web Store restyle the map itself in dark colors instead of inverting it. They give the most natural result; check reviews, the developer, and the permissions before installing, since they only need access to Google Maps.
- Your usual dark mode extension, with Maps excluded. Keep dark mode everywhere else and let Maps stay light. With Modern Dark Mode or any extension with per-site settings, add google.com/maps to the exclusions.
- An extension that leaves images alone. Filter-based dark modes that skip images and media darken the side panel while keeping map tiles close to their real colors. Test with satellite view: if it looks like a normal photo, the tool is leaving images alone.
- Switch to satellite view at night. Satellite imagery is naturally darker than the default map and easier on the eyes in a dim room.
- Soften the light version. Lower screen brightness or add a warm tint with Blue Light Filter. The map stays accurate and easier to look at.
Avoid Chrome's force-dark flag for Maps
The chrome://flags force-dark setting applies to every site with no exceptions, so it always affects the map. If you use Maps in the evening, an extension with an exclusion list is the better choice. Chrome's dark mode flag vs an extension covers the trade-offs.
Frequently asked questions
Does Google Maps have a dark mode on desktop?
Not on the website, as of 2026. The Android and iPhone apps do. On a computer you need a browser extension.
Why does dark mode make Google Maps look weird?
Most dark mode tools invert colors, and the map is an image, so its colors flip. Use a Maps-specific extension or exclude Maps from your dark mode tool.
How do I make Google Maps follow my phone's dark mode?
In the app's settings, choose Same as device theme (Android) or Same as device (iPhone).
