Dark Mode for SharePoint Online and Microsoft 365 Web Apps

Short answer: SharePoint Online still has no personal dark mode switch for the sites you visit. Site owners can now give a whole site a dark look with Microsoft's dark site themes, the SharePoint mobile app follows your phone's dark mode, and for a personal dark SharePoint in the browser you need an extension. Here's each option, plus the Microsoft 365 apps that do have their own dark mode.
What SharePoint offers in 2026
- Dark site themes: in early 2026 Microsoft added two Microsoft-designed dark themes for SharePoint sites, Dark Blue and Dark Teal. A site owner applies one, and everyone who visits the site sees it.
- SharePoint mobile app: follows your phone's system dark mode.
- SharePoint admin center: admins got a light and dark theme option in 2026. It only affects the admin center, not sites.
- No personal toggle: there's still no setting that switches SharePoint sites to dark just for you.
Option 1: apply a dark theme to a site (site owners)
- Open the site and click the Settings gear.
- Choose Change the look, then Theme.
- Pick one of the dark themes and click Save.
This changes the site for everyone, so check with your team first, and check that your logo, images, and any custom colors still look right. If you don't see the dark themes, your organization may restrict which themes are available; ask your SharePoint admin.
Option 2: use the mobile app
On iPhone or Android, turn on your phone's dark mode and the SharePoint app follows it. It's the easiest way to read SharePoint in the dark if you're on your phone anyway.
Option 3: a dark mode extension for your own browser
For a personal dark SharePoint on a computer, a browser extension is the practical route. It darkens pages, lists, and libraries without changing anything for your colleagues. Modern Dark Mode works well here because it has per-site controls. Two things to watch:
- Don't double-darken. If a site already uses a dark theme, or you use Outlook and Teams in their own dark mode, exclude those sites in the extension, or colors flip back to light.
- Check colored content. List formatting colors, charts, and document previews can look wrong when darkened. Exclude the page while you review them.
Avoid Chrome's force-dark flag for this: it applies to every site with no exceptions. Here's how the flag compares with an extension.
Microsoft 365 web apps that have their own dark mode
- Outlook on the web: Settings, then General, then Appearance. See Outlook web dark mode for emails that look wrong.
- Teams: Settings, then Appearance and accessibility, then Dark.
- Word for the web: the View tab has Dark Mode, plus a switch to show the page itself in light while the menus stay dark.
Microsoft moves these options around from time to time; if one isn't where you expect, search the app's settings for "dark" or "theme".
Before sharing your screen
If you've darkened SharePoint with an extension, colleagues won't see what you see. Switch the extension off for that tab before presenting a list or dashboard.
Frequently asked questions
Does SharePoint have a dark mode?
Not a personal one for sites. Site owners can apply Microsoft's Dark Blue or Dark Teal site themes, the mobile app follows your phone's dark mode, and an extension gives you a personal dark view in the browser.
Can I make SharePoint dark just for me?
Yes, with a dark mode browser extension. Site themes change the site for everyone.
Why can't I see the dark site themes?
Your organization may limit the themes site owners can choose, or the rollout may not have reached your tenant yet. Your SharePoint admin can check.
