How AI-Generated Content Is Flooding Search Results in 2026

Cheap AI writing tools let some sites publish thousands of pages quickly, many of them generic articles written to match search terms rather than help anyone. That makes it harder to find pages written by people who actually know the subject.
What Google says
Google says it judges content by quality, not by whether AI helped write it. Its spam policies target "scaled content abuse": mass-producing pages mainly to rank, however they're made. After its March 2024 core update, Google said it was seeing 45% less low-quality, unoriginal content in results. Filler still gets through, especially for niche questions with few good pages.
How to spot AI filler pages
- A long introduction that repeats the question before answering it.
- No specific details: no numbers, examples, screenshots or first-hand experience.
- Repeated phrases and FAQs that just restate the question.
- No real author, or an author with no other trace online.
- A site covering everything, from mortgages to dog food, with no clear expertise.
- Confident errors, such as settings that don't exist or outdated steps.
Search tricks for better results
- Use the Web filter: Google's "Web" tab shows plain text links without extra features.
- Search specific sources: add

-site:followed by a site you keep seeing and don't trust. - Find older pages:

Go to the source
For product settings, read the maker's help pages. For health, use medical organizations. For laws, read government sites. Original sources are less likely to be rewritten filler.
AI Overviews are a separate issue
Google's own AI Overviews summarize other pages at the top of results, and they can repeat errors from poor sources. See how AI Overviews get answers wrong.
Clean up the results page
Search Cleaner hides the Google sections you choose, such as AI Overviews, the AI Mode tab and shopping carousels, so the regular results are easier to scan. It doesn't detect or hide AI-written pages; for that, the habits above work best.
