How Bionic Reading Actually Works and What the Research Says

Bionic Reading is a way of formatting text that makes the first letters of each word bold. The idea is that your eyes catch the bold part and your brain fills in the rest, so you read faster and more easily. It became popular online, especially among people with ADHD.
How it works
- The first part of each word is bold, for example reading faster.
- How much is bolded can usually be adjusted.
- Bionic Reading is a trademarked method from a Swiss company, with official apps and a browser extension. Other tools offer similar formatting.
What the research says
Controlled studies so far haven't found that it makes people read faster or understand more. When researchers compared reading speed and comprehension with and without bolded word starts, the differences were small or absent. There's also no strong evidence that it helps people with ADHD or dyslexia specifically.
That doesn't mean nobody benefits. Some people find it feels easier, or that it helps them stay engaged, and comfort matters for reading long texts. But it's not a proven way to read faster.
Why it might feel helpful
- Novelty: something new holds attention for a while.
- Visual anchors: the bold parts give the eyes something to land on, which some people find reduces skipping lines.
- Expectation: believing a tool helps can make reading feel easier.
Test it yourself
- Pick two similar articles of the same length.
- Read one normally and one with bionic formatting, timing each.
- Afterwards, write down three things you remember from each.
- Repeat over a week. Keep it only if it helps consistently.
Other approaches worth trying
- One paragraph at a time: ADHD Reading Focus shows one paragraph in larger text, with optional auto-advance. See paragraph vs line focus.
- Listening while reading: Chrome's Reading mode reads aloud and highlights words.
- Better formatting: larger text, wider spacing and shorter lines. See fonts for ADHD and dyslexia.
- Progress you can see: Reading Progress Bar shows how much is left.
