How to Create a Morning Browser Routine for Maximum Productivity

The first half hour of a workday often sets its tone. If you start in a pile of tabs from yesterday, a news site and a full inbox, you spend the morning reacting. A simple browser routine lets you start on purpose.
1. Open the right pages automatically
In Chrome, go to Settings → On startup → Open a specific page or set of pages, and add the pages you need every morning, such as your calendar, task list and team chat. See opening pages on startup.
Or keep a "Morning" bookmark folder and right-click it → Open all.
2. Calendar first
Look at the day before your inbox. Know your meetings and free blocks before email starts setting priorities for you. Decline or question meetings you don't need. Meeting Cost Calculator shows what a meeting costs as it runs, which can make that decision clearer.
3. Write your top three
Pick the three things that would make today a good day. Write them where you'll see them. Sticky Notes Anywhere keeps checklists in a browser panel (Ctrl + Shift + S), so they're one shortcut away all day.
4. Email in a box of time
Give your inbox 15 to 30 minutes, then close it. Reply to what's quick, turn bigger requests into tasks, and leave the rest for a later session.
5. Start your first focus block
Begin with your most important task before checking anything else. A timer helps: try the Pomodoro timer. See a browser Pomodoro system.
Keep distractions for later
- Remove news and social sites from your startup pages and bookmarks bar.
- Use a site blocker for the first hour or two.
- Mute non-urgent chat channels until your first focus block is done.
Separate work and personal
Use separate Chrome profiles for work and personal browsing. Each has its own startup pages, bookmarks and signed-in accounts, so personal tabs don't follow you into work.
Clear yesterday's tabs
Too many open tabs slow your computer and your thinking. Save any you need into a bookmark folder or reading list, and start the day clean. See working through saved links.
Adjust it
Try the routine for two weeks, then keep what helps and drop what doesn't. A routine that fits you is better than a perfect one you don't follow.
