How to Resize Text Independent of Page Zoom in Chrome

Page zoom enlarges everything: text, images, menus and layout. If you only want bigger text, Chrome has settings for that, though how well they work depends on how each site is built.
1. Chrome's font size setting
Go to Settings → Appearance → Font size and choose Large or Very large. This changes the default text size. Sites that set their own sizes relative to that default get bigger; sites that set fixed sizes don't change.
2. Minimum font size
This is the setting that works on far more sites. Go to Settings → Appearance → Customize fonts, and move the Minimum font size slider up. Chrome then never shows text smaller than that, whatever the site says.
- Start around 14 to 16 and adjust.
- Very high values can make some layouts overlap, because text no longer fits the space the site gave it.
3. Reading mode
For articles, right-click the page → Open in reading mode. The side panel shows the text with your choice of font, size, line spacing and colors, and leaves the page itself alone.
4. Text only, for one paragraph at a time
ADHD Reading Focus shows one paragraph at a time in larger text, with an adjustable size. Useful for long reading on sites where other settings break the layout.
5. On Android
Open Chrome → Settings → Accessibility, and use the Text scaling slider. Turn on Force enable zoom so you can pinch to zoom on sites that try to prevent it.
When zoom is better
If you need everything bigger, including buttons and icons, page zoom (Ctrl and +) is simpler and keeps layouts intact. Chrome remembers zoom for each site. You can set a default for all sites in Settings → Appearance → Page zoom.
System-wide options
- Windows: Settings → Accessibility → Text size makes text bigger in Windows and many apps.
- Mac: System Settings → Displays offers larger text by lowering the resolution, and Accessibility → Zoom magnifies part of the screen.
Make it comfortable, not just bigger
Line spacing and contrast matter as much as size. See custom line spacing in Chrome and how font size affects reading fatigue.
