How Websites Optimize to Be Cited by AI Systems Like ChatGPT

When ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Google's AI Overviews answer a question, they often cite a few websites. Being one of those sources brings visitors and credibility. There's no guaranteed method, but a clear picture of how these tools find sources shows what helps.

How AI tools find sources

  • They search first. For current questions, AI assistants run web searches and read the top results. Google's AI features use Google's index; ChatGPT's search uses its own crawler and search partners; Perplexity has its own crawler too.
  • They pick passages that answer the question directly, from pages they can read and trust.

So the basics of being found in search still apply. See how ChatGPT browses the web.

Check your crawler settings

  • OpenAI uses separate crawlers: GPTBot for training, OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT search, and ChatGPT-User when a user asks it to visit a page. You can block training and still allow search.
  • Google-Extended in robots.txt controls whether Google can use your content for Gemini training. It doesn't remove you from AI Overviews, which use normal Google Search crawling.
  • Check whether a firewall or bot protection service is blocking AI crawlers you actually want.

What helps a page get cited

  1. Answer clearly and early: a direct one- or two-sentence answer under a heading that matches the question. See writing for snippets and AI citation.
  2. Offer something original: your own data, prices, tests, examples or expert experience. Summaries of other summaries are rarely chosen.
  3. Keep it current: update facts and show the date.
  4. Make it readable to machines: real text rather than images of text, clear headings, fast pages, structured data where it fits.
  5. Show who's behind it: named authors, an about page, contact details.
  6. Get mentioned elsewhere: reviews, interviews, and links from respected sites in your field.
  7. Be in more than one index: submit your sitemap to Bing Webmaster Tools as well as Google Search Console.

See which pages AI tools send visitors to

  • Analytics: in GA4, look at referral traffic from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com, and which landing pages they reach.
  • Server logs: visits from ChatGPT-User or PerplexityBot show pages AI tools are reading.
  • Ask the tools: try the questions your audience asks and note which sites are cited.
  • SEO suites: some, such as Ahrefs and Semrush, now track brand mentions in AI answers.

What doesn't help

Stuffing pages with questions, hiding text for AI, or publishing hundreds of thin pages. An llms.txt file is a proposal that the major AI search tools haven't committed to using. See also zero-click searches.
