How to Write for Featured Snippets and AI Citation

Featured snippets are the short answers Google shows above or beside results, quoted from a page. AI answers, from Google's AI Overviews to ChatGPT search and Perplexity, also quote and link to sources. The writing habits that help with one usually help with the other.

What Google says

Google says there's no special markup or trick for appearing in AI Overviews or AI Mode; the same SEO basics apply, and pages need to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet. Featured snippets are chosen automatically from pages that already rank well. So writing for citation starts with writing pages worth ranking.

Answer the question directly

Put a clear, complete answer right after the heading that asks the question. One to three sentences that make sense on their own are easy to quote. Then explain the details.

Use question-style headings

Headings such as "How long does it take to..." or "What is..." match how people search, and tell search engines what each section answers.

Use lists and tables

  • Numbered lists for steps.
  • Bulleted lists for options or features.
  • Tables for comparisons, prices and specifications.

These formats are often lifted directly into snippets and AI answers.

Define terms clearly

A plain one-sentence definition near the top ("X is...") is one of the most-quoted patterns on the web.

Show real expertise

  • First-hand experience, original data, photos and examples.
  • Named authors with relevant background.
  • Sources for claims, and dates on time-sensitive information.

AI systems and search engines both favor content that adds something beyond what other pages say.

Keep it technically sound

  • Make sure pages load without heavy scripts, so crawlers see the text.
  • Don't block the crawlers of AI services you want to appear in. See AI crawler controls.
  • Add structured data for articles, products and organizations. Note that Google now shows FAQ and how-to rich results rarely, so don't count on those.

Track the results

Google Search Console shows queries and clicks; AI citations are harder to track, but referrals from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and similar sites show up in analytics. See how knowledge graphs power AI answers and llms.txt.
