These two tools solve different problems. OneNote Web Clipper copies web pages into your OneNote notebooks, where you organize and sync them. Sticky Notes Anywhere puts notes on the pages themselves, so they're there when you come back. Disclosure: Sticky Notes Anywhere is made by Bushe.co.
OneNote Web Clipper
- Microsoft's free extension saves a full page, a region, an article or a bookmark into a OneNote notebook and section you choose.
- Needs a Microsoft account. Clips sync to OneNote on all your devices.
- You add notes inside OneNote, alongside your other notes, and search them there.
- The clip is a copy, so it survives if the page changes or disappears.
Best for: research, collecting sources and building a notebook you'll use on several devices.
Sticky Notes Anywhere
- Sticky Notes Anywhere adds notes to any web page. They reappear whenever you open that page again.
Ctrl + Shift + Xadds a note, andCtrl + Shift + Sopens a panel listing all your notes (Cmdon Mac).- No account. Notes are stored in your browser only, which keeps them private but means they don't sync to other devices.
- The note stays with the live page, not a copy.
Best for: reminders and to-dos tied to a page, such as a client's site, a listing you're watching or a form you'll finish later.
Side by side
- Where notes live: OneNote notebooks vs on the page itself.
- Sync: OneNote syncs everywhere; Sticky Notes Anywhere stays in one browser.
- Account: Microsoft account vs none.
- Saves the page content: OneNote yes; Sticky Notes Anywhere no.
- Privacy: OneNote stores clips in Microsoft's cloud; Sticky Notes Anywhere keeps notes on your computer.
Using both
They work well together. Clip an article into OneNote when you want a permanent copy for research. Use a sticky note on a page when you want a reminder the next time you visit, like "renewal due in March" on an account page.
Other options
Notion, Evernote and other note apps have their own web clippers, and annotation tools like Hypothesis let you highlight and comment on pages with a group. See note-taking extensions that work on web pages.
