The Future of Search Engines: Will AI Replace Google

AI chat assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity now answer many questions people used to type into Google. That has led to predictions that search engines are finished. The reality so far is messier: search is changing shape rather than disappearing.
What AI answers do well
- Explaining: "how does a heat pump work" in plain words, with follow-up questions.
- Combining: pulling points from several sources into one summary.
- Working with your text: rewriting, comparing options, planning.
Where traditional search still wins
- Going to a specific site: many searches are just a quick way to reach a known website.
- Local results: opening hours, directions, nearby shops.
- Breaking news and live information: scores, prices, weather.
- Checking sources: seeing who says what, and judging their reliability yourself.
- Shopping: comparing products, prices and reviews across stores.

Google is becoming an AI engine too
Rather than being replaced, Google has added AI to search: AI Overviews at the top of many results, and AI Mode, a chat-style search. Chat assistants, meanwhile, have added web search. The two are converging. See how AI Overviews changed search and how Perplexity differs from Google.
Is Google losing users?
Google still handles the large majority of searches worldwide, according to trackers such as StatCounter. But how people search is shifting: more questions go to chatbots first, and more searches end without a click to any website. See zero-click searches.
What it means for the web
If AI tools answer questions using websites' content but send fewer visitors to them, those sites earn less and may publish less. That's the biggest open question for the future of search. See how sites try to get cited by AI.
How to search well now
- Use AI tools to understand a topic, then check important facts against original sources.
- Use search when you need a specific site, local details, or the latest information.
- Look at the sources AI tools cite, and open them for anything that matters.
Prefer plain results?
Search Cleaner hides the Google sections you choose, including AI Overviews and the AI Mode tab, so you get a page of regular links. See also Gemini vs ChatGPT.
