A skincare store where every label reads like a lab result

A skincare store with the active, strength and pH on every label, and a checker for what you can use together.

Assay is a made-up brand. I designed and built it to show what a skincare store can look like; the people, prices, results and reviews on it are samples.

The brief

Assay is a made-up Los Angeles skincare brand: single-active serums, acids, a barrier cream and a mineral sunscreen.

Skincare shoppers compare percentages and worry about mixing the wrong things. Most stores bury both behind marketing copy.

The idea

The lab result

Every label reads like an assay slip: the active, its strength and its pH printed big on the front, plus a color strip for the routine step, like a pH test strip. Lab violet on white with test-strip colors; Archivo, expanded for display, with JetBrains Mono for the numbers.

Design decisions

Numbers on the front

Strength and pH are the first thing on every bottle and product page, and “How to read an Assay label” explains each part.

A routine checker

Tick what’s on your shelf, Assay or any brand, and get a morning and night routine in the right order, with a plain reason for anything to keep apart.

Color by step

Every strip color is a routine step (blue cleanses, violet treats, pink exfoliates, green moisturizes, gold protects), so the shelf reads like a routine instead of a catalog.

What’s built

  • Routine checker that orders products and flags pairs to keep apart
  • Labels with the active, strength and pH up front
  • Shop by type with filters and sort
  • Product pages with how to use, what’s in it and what it pairs with
  • Bag and demo checkout that sends nothing

Pages to try

Everything works in the browser. Forms and checkout don’t send anything.
